Fire Installation Standards: BYKHY, TS EN and NFPA Guide

It is necessary to distinguish which standard regulates what in the project and application of fire protection systems. While the fire legislation in force in Turkey determines the system requirements, product and design standards form the technical framework of calculation, equipment and testing.

White Paper

Scope of standards and project implementation

This guide does not reproduce the full text of the relevant standards. It summarizes which technical issues should be checked in the design; Binding articles, current editions and national acceptance conditions should be confirmed from official sources.

01

What questions does BYKHY answer?

The Regulation on Fire Protection of Buildings is the main national reference source in terms of fire safety obligations depending on the usage class and building characteristics. Whether a system is necessary or not and the technical dimensioning of that system are separate questions. Current provisions of the regulation should be checked from the official legislation source.

02

TS EN 12845 and sprinkler design

TS EN 12845 addresses the technical framework for the design, installation and maintenance of automatic sprinkler systems. Hazard class, protection area, water supply, alarm valve arrangement and hydraulic critical circuit are interrelated calculation issues. In storage applications, product and shelf conditions are also examined.

03

Fire cabinets and TS EN 671

TS EN 671 series covers product groups such as fire hose cabinets and hose reels. The standard conformity of the product does not alone determine the cabinet placement throughout the building and the required flow-pressure of the system; It is evaluated together with the regulation and hydraulic system calculation.

04

Pump, tank and external hydrant system

The pump set is not selected by label pressure alone. The flow rate and pressure of the most unfavorable point, line losses, available tank reserve, pump curve and test conditions are verified together. The administration's project criteria and NFPA 20 or other approval requirements deemed necessary should be clearly separated in the specification.

05

Special extinguishing: F3 foam and gas system

The performance of fluorine-free F3 foams in flammable liquids is related to the EN 1568 series, while fixed foam systems are related to the EN 13565 series, as far as applicable. TS EN 15004 series is examined for clean gas and inert gas options. The test and equipment suitability of the selected extinguishing agent should also be verified.

06

Application and acceptance documents

The discovery report, hazard class justification, hydraulic calculation, material list, technical specification, drawing and test reports must match each other. Scope of product certifications (exact product and model), system operating range and site conditions are checked before delivery.

Frequently asked technical questions

Are BYKHY and TS EN 12845 the same thing?

No. BYKHY is the national fire safety legislation; TS EN 12845 is the technical design standard for sprinkler systems. The two cannot be used interchangeably.

Does UL/FM certification automatically make the entire system compliant?

No. The document is evaluated for the relevant product and scope of use; The entire project must be separately designed and controlled.

Technical Reminder

The standard number becomes meaningful with the correct version and scope of use.

Product certification, design standard and applicable legislation are different elements. The version, scope and equipment suitability of the relevant reference should be explained separately in the technical specification and acceptance file.

Account and resource verification record

This guide explains the general technical approach. The standard version, design value and method to be applied must be verified by the engineer in charge for the actual project. The formulas in the downloadable calculus files have not undergone independent engineering verification in this release update; It cannot be used in place of an approved project account or official report.

The source, unit, acceptance, publication used and result control of the input should be kept together in the accounting record. It is not assumed that the formula will give the same result if the unit of the inputs is changed. A sample result is not a statement of capacity or suitability for the actual facility.
