Ventilation, Smoke Evacuation and Pressurization Standards

Normal operating ventilation and the smoke control system in case of fire are not designed for the same task. Calculations regarding fresh air and process suction should be evaluated separately from escape routes and smoke evacuation/pressurization calculations depending on the fire scenario.

Scope of standards and project implementation

This guide does not reproduce the full text of the relevant standards. It summarizes which technical issues should be checked in the design; Binding articles, current editions and national acceptance conditions should be confirmed from official sources.

01

EN 16798: Indoor air and building ventilation

Depending on the building use, indoor design conditions, ventilation performance and related energy approach can be addressed within the scope of the applicable sections of the EN 16798 series. A single air exchange coefficient should not automatically be applied to every space.

02

Industrial local suction calculation

Welding fumes, machine fumes, dust and heat load are separate pollutant sources. Hood capture behavior, duct air velocity, filter loss and exhaust discharge are evaluated in the design method. In places with flammable dust, the risk of explosion should be analyzed separately.

03

TS EN 12101: Smoke and heat control

TS EN 12101 series includes technical references on different components and methods of smoke/heat control systems. Which section applies must be selected according to the type of fan, power supply, smoke curtain or pressure differential system.

04

Escape ladder pressurization

Stair, hall and door leaks; The required air flow rate is calculated together with the pressure difference and the openability of the door at the time of escape. The pressure difference target cannot be selected only from the fan manufacturer's catalogue.

05

Fire damper and control scenario

Damper positions, fan control sequence, fire detection signal, electrical power continuity, fire department control and fault monitoring should be shown in a scenario chart.

06

Testing and acceptance

Air flow rates, total pressure loss, actual fan duty point, door opening force, pressure differences and automation scenario are verified in field tests. Design assumptions are compared with measurement reports.

Frequently asked technical questions

Can a normal ventilation fan be used as a smoke exhaust fan?

Only if it meets the temperature resistance, operation and certification conditions required in the project. The ordinary fan is not automatically considered a smoke fan.

Is the pressurization fan selected by looking only at the Pa value?

No. Flow rate, leakage, door opening force, duct losses and fire scenario are examined together.

Technical Reminder

The standard number becomes meaningful with the correct version and scope of use.

Product certification, design standard and applicable legislation are different elements. The version, scope and equipment suitability of the relevant reference should be explained separately in the technical specification and acceptance file.

Account and resource verification record

This guide explains the general technical approach. The standard version, design value and method to be applied must be verified by the engineer in charge for the actual project. The formulas in the downloadable calculus files have not undergone independent engineering verification in this release update; It cannot be used in place of an approved project account or official report.

The source, unit, acceptance, publication used and result control of the input should be kept together in the accounting record. It is not assumed that the formula will give the same result if the unit of the inputs is changed. A sample result is not a statement of capacity or suitability for the actual facility.
