Heating, Cooling and Hydronic System Standards Guide

In heating and cooling installations, device capacity, pipe diameter and control method cannot be calculated independently of each other. The standards provide different reference areas for load calculation, safety, equipment performance and indoor environmental conditions.

White Paper

Scope of standards and project implementation

This guide does not reproduce the full text of the relevant standards. It summarizes which technical issues should be checked in the design; Binding articles, current editions and national acceptance conditions should be confirmed from official sources.

01

TS EN 12831: Heat loss calculation

When determining the design heating load of the space, the external environment, building envelope, ventilation and usage conditions are evaluated. Calculated design load and actual operating consumption may differ; Site and system level data should be kept separate.

02

TS EN 12828: Water heating system design

In water heating circuits, temperature and pressure limits, system safety, expansion and main components must be evaluated together. The standard number alone does not cover all project requirements; The area of use and other relevant parts should be verified.

03

EN 14511: Heat pump performance

Performance claims for heat pumps are based on specific testing and operating conditions. Catalog capacity may not equal actual outdoor air and water temperature. In low-temperature heating systems, terminal capacity should also be reconsidered.

04

Cooling load and chiller/FCU system

Sun, person, equipment, fresh air and moisture loads are evaluated separately. Chiller duty, fan-coil coil capacity and cold water temperature regime are compared in the same scenario.

05

Hydronic pump and valve selection

Water flow rate is related to thermal load and temperature difference; Pipe/armature/device pressure losses of the critical line determine the pump duty point. Balancing valves, expansion tank, air and sediment separator are arranged according to operating conditions.

06

Insulation and commissioning

The risk of condensation and vapor barrier is important in cold pipes, and the risk of heat loss/contact is important in hot pipes. Line cleanliness, sealing, pump and terminal flow measurement are accepted by comparison with design documents.

Frequently asked technical questions

Is heat pump power selected only by building square meters?

No. Design heat loss, heat dissipation temperature and actual operating conditions of the device must be taken into account.

Is building height added to hydronic pump head?

In closed circulation circuits, static load should not be confused with the friction pressure required for circulation. Filling/expansion pressure is controlled separately.

Technical Reminder

The standard number becomes meaningful with the correct version and scope of use.

Product certification, design standard and applicable legislation are different elements. The version, scope and equipment suitability of the relevant reference should be explained separately in the technical specification and acceptance file.

Account and resource verification record

This guide explains the general technical approach. The standard version, design value and method to be applied must be verified by the engineer in charge for the actual project. The formulas in the downloadable calculus files have not undergone independent engineering verification in this release update; It cannot be used in place of an approved project account or official report.

The source, unit, acceptance, publication used and result control of the input should be kept together in the accounting record. It is not assumed that the formula will give the same result if the unit of the inputs is changed. A sample result is not a statement of capacity or suitability for the actual facility.
